When a student hands in an assignment lesson, the submission lands in your marking queue on the Assignment marking page (headed Assignment submissions). You give marks and feedback, then either save the marks or return the work for another try.
The submissions queue
- Figures: Needs marking, Returned, Marked and All submissions.
- Tabs: Needs marking, Returned, Marked and All, each with a count. Needs marking opens first. Search by student, email or course.
- Each card shows the assignment, the student and their email, the course / module / lesson, when it was handed in, the status, an Open lesson link, the student's written answer and their attached files (select a file to open it).
- You only see submissions for courses you teach.
Marking a submission
Step 1: Open Assignment marking
It is in the Student work group of the menu. A gold badge on the row shows how many submissions are waiting.
Sign in to open this screenStep 2: Read the work
Open each attached file; they open in a new tab.
Step 3: Enter Marks and Feedback
Marks from 0 up to the total shown in the box (for example 0 / 100). Feedback is optional; only this student sees it.
Step 4: Choose Save marks or Return for another try
Save marks closes it as marked (you see Submission graded). Return for another try sends it back for another attempt (Submission returned). The list reloads.
You can also mark from inside the lesson: open the assignment lesson in the curriculum, and the Student submissions section lists the work for that assignment with Marks, Feedback and Save mark.
Statuses
What each status means
- Pending markingHanded in and waiting for you. Shown under Needs marking.
- ReturnedYou sent it back for another attempt, with your marks and feedback.
- MarkedYou closed it with Save marks.
What students see
- Students see Graded once you choose Save marks, with the marks awarded and your feedback under Teacher feedback.
- A returned submission still shows as Submitted to the student, with your marks and feedback. If you want a new attempt, say so in the feedback.
- A student can submit again at any time. A new attempt replaces the old one, clears the marks and feedback, and puts it back in Needs marking.
- Submissions after the due date are recorded as late.
Rules the student's upload follows
These come from the assignment settings in the lesson: the submission type (text and file, file only or text only), the maximum number of files, and allowed files (JPEG, PNG, GIF, PDF, DOC, DOCX and ZIP, up to 50 MB each). See Lesson types.

FAQ
Is the student emailed when I mark?
Students see the result on the assignment in their course. Tell them in class or with Emails if you need them to act.
Where did Assignment Submissions go?
It is the same page under a new name: Assignment marking, in the Student work group of the menu. Mark done is now Save marks and Return is now Return for another try.
Can I change a mark later?
Yes. Open the submission under Marked or Returned, change the marks or feedback and choose the button again.
What happens to my feedback if the student resubmits?
It is cleared with the old attempt. Mark the new attempt as usual.
Does the pass mark matter?
The pass mark is shown on the assignment. Course progress only needs a submission.
Can a campus mark work?
A campus can mark assignments on its own campus courses from the lesson editor.
